Emerging evidence suggests that vaporized 5-MeO-DMT may occasion mystical experiences of comparable intensity to those occasioned by more widely studied psychedelics such as psilocybin, but no empirical study has tested this hypothesis. While most psychedelics, including DMT, work by binding to and stimulating serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, 5-MeO DMT has a 1,000 times greater affinity for 5-HT1A receptors. Serotonergic psychedelics have potential therapeutic effects in treating anxiety and mood disorders, often after a single dose, and are suggested to have plasticity-inducing action. Further studies shall clarify whether the sleep-like electrophysiological features induced by psychedelics are indeed related to the dream-like psychological features of the psychedelic experience.
